About the cave Csodabogyós

Documents say that the settlement has been founded in 1262, the local roman catholic church has been built in the 13th century. A part of the village is now a summer resort, visitors can find many accomodations in the two camp sites and the pensions near the shore, as well as in private houses in the village itself. The greatest stalactite cave of Western Hungary has been recently discovered here, and you can also spend your time and find pleasure in the well-known Africa Museum and Safari Park of the village, founded by a reputed African hunter born in Balatonederics. Near Balatonederics, in the beautiful forest of the Balaton Uplands National Park there is the strictly protected, more than 5 km long Csodabogyós Cave. Certain branches of the cave have been opened to the public. If you are curious to see this extraordinary underground world, or interested in the history of the development of the cave and would like to admire the spectacular dripstones, discover the awe-inspiring sights under the conduct of tour guides!

About the Castle of Szigliget

The castle was built on order of the Abbey of Pannonhalma between 1260 and 1262. Situated on top of the 239-metre high Castle Hill the renovation of this ruined, elongated building is in progress. A spectacular view over the Balaton can be enjoyed from here. Starting out behind the church the visitor arrives into the Lower Castle where a machicolated gallery leads to the round bastion. From here a steep path goes to the Upper Castle which stands approximately 20 metres higher than the Lower Castle. The former dungeon, the palace and the keep of the lord were here. A major restoration work was started in 1991. Completion of the excavation and partial reconstruction of the castle is in progress.

The earliest wings of the castle were constructed in the 13th century. The most famous lords were King Béla the 4th, the Újlaky family, Bálint Török and Bálint Magyar. The castle was under Turkish siége several times in the 16th and 17th centuries, however they never made it to victory. Unfortunately, thunder struck the castle around 1690, for which reason the powder stock exploded and the entire fortress burnt into it's ashes in the great fire.
